IPAF Harness User Training

This harness user course is a short, practical-only course that must be completed in person at either an approved IPAF centre or a client’s premises. It will allow delegates to safely fit and adjust a harness and lanyard for use in a MEWP.

This course is for delegates who are using harnesses. All delegates need to have completed and passed the Harness Awareness course before completing this course.

Candidates will be asked to perform a pre-use check of a Harness and Lanyard, don and adjust the harness and attach it to the correct anchor point of a MEWP, adjusting to achieve effective restraint.

If delegates have completed the Harness Awareness course online they are then able to do the Harness User course as part of the IPAF Operator course.

Please ensure you have standard PPE: Hardhat, hi-vis vest or jacket and a harness and restraint lanyard.

All delegates will need to have completed and passed the IPAF Harness Awareness (HA) course ahead of completing the Harness User (HU) course. This can be done online or combined on the same day with the awareness course taking place ahead of the User course.

Who is this IPAF harness user course for?

The Harness User or HU course is aimed at anyone who will personally use a harness in a MEWP. This course is to be taken after completion of the HA training and acts as the practical assessment. This level of training is sufficient for people who will use a harness but will not conduct statutory inspections on behalf of an organisation.

How long does it take to complete this IPAF safety harness user training?

The IPAF harness user training course is a half-day course that must be completed in person at either an approved IPAF centre or a client’s premises. However, the in-person classroom duration can be reduced by completing the Harness Awareness (HA) via E-Learning before attending an IPAF centre. Please note, the IPAF Harness Awareness must be completed before this course can be taken.

How is harness user training assessed?

This harness user course is observed and assessed by the instructor and marked as correct or incorrect.

Can the IPAF Harness User (HU) Course be tied into my IPAF MEWP Operator Course?

Yes. If you need to also complete the IPAF MEWP Operator course then you can add the HU category of training to the day’s course without increasing the duration.

However, you will need to complete the Harness Awareness HA eLearning prior to attending your MEWP Operator training course. On the day of your MEWP Operator course, the instructor will ask to see the HA pass certificate. You will then be required to carry out a short 15-minute practical, assessing your ability to pre-use, check the harness and lanyard, put it on correctly and attach/adjust it correctly in a MEWP.
